Warning after home and car wrecked by e-bike battery fire

Firefighters are warning people to beware of faulty batteries after an e-bike burst into flames in Sydney, burning out a garage and a car in the process.

A man was forced to jump to safety from the second floor balcony of a building at Eastgardens in the city's east after the fire broke out last night.

Fourteen Fire and Rescue NSW trucks rushed to the fire in Mathewson Street at 8pm.

All residents made it safely out of the home, including a male who jumped from a second-storey balcony.

No-one was injured.

Fire investigators believe a faulty lithium-ion battery on the bike exploded.

Hazardous Materials firefighters also removed other lithium-ion batteries from the house which they said are at risk of igniting or exploding, they said.

FRNSW warned faulty or over-charged Lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous.

"They can off-gas and explode, causing intense fires that are extremely difficult to extinguish and are at risk of re-igniting," FRNSW said in a statement.

"FRNSW advises the public to always stick to reputable and compatible lithium-ion battery brands,

"Avoid over-charging and charging devices whilst you're asleep or away from home."

They also reminded people to have a working smoke alarm.
