The Department of Transport has issued an urgent recall for thousands of Kia cars due to fears a fault in the vehicle's oil pump could increase the risk of a serious road accident.
The recall affects all Kia MQ4 Sorento cars made between 2020 and 2022.
Production variations may lead to a crack in the printed circuit board of the vehicle's transmission electric oil pump and cause it to fail, the recall states.

"If the electric oil pump fails, hydraulic pressure will be lost and the vehicle may lose drive thereby increasing the risk of an accident resulting in serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users," the statement reads.
Vehicle owners are being urged to immediately contact a Kia dealer to schedule an appointment to have the transmission software updated.
About 8,500 cars are affected by the recall.
