At about 7.30pm, a shopfront in Belconnen in the ACT exploded causing significant damage to the local Turkish Kebab and Pizza shop. The blast also affected parts of Kingsley’s Chicken fast food restaurants, which caught on fire.Black smoke billowed from the top of the building where the eateries were located as flames continued to engulf the shopfront. Shattered glass was strewn across the parking lot about 10 metres in front of the shopfront along with bent metal debris and panelling from the building’s structure. Residents living in town and nearby in surrounding suburbs said they felt the shockwave from the blast on Rae Street. Vishal Sood, who was in his home opposite the shop at the time, told The Canberra Times that the explosion felt “bigger than an earthquake” and that “the roof of that building was in the air … for a while”.Emergency services arrived on scene and police closed off the roads while ACT Fire and Rescue crews examined the cause of the explosion. One person sustained injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene.“Firefighters are working to contain a fire which is burning within a shop. Fire crews have confirmed the building is fully involved in fire,” ACT Fire and Rescue said.“Surrounding buildings have been evacuated as a precaution while crews work to slow the spread of the fire.”Firefighters also advised locals in the neighbouring streets to “close windows and turn off their airconditioning.”An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.NED-5192-DT-App-Banner
