Six men have been charged after a man was shot in inner-city Brisbane on New Year's Day.

They're each accused of one count of affray and going armed so as to cause fear, stemming from a disturbance on Carl Street, Woolloongabba, about 11am yesterday.

Police are still investigating the shooting itself, which left a 21-year-old from Goodna, south-west of the city, in a stable condition.

Police believe there was an "altercation" on the street before the man was shot in his upper left arm and taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition.

A police spokesperson couldn't confirm reports the alleged victim knew the other men.

The accused are from Goodna, Collingwood Park, Redbank and Bellbird Park and aged between 18 and 24.
