Round one no certainty after five Gold Coast players test positive



The entire Gold Coast Suns playing list entered isolation and completed PCR tests after one of the side’s players tested positive to the virus.A further four Suns players returned positive Covid tests on Friday morning.All players are fully vaccinated, and each positive case is experiencing either mild or no symptoms, and will remain in isolation until the mandated quarantine period is over.The Great Barrier Reef Arena will host the match between the Suns and the Giants, with the league optimistic the match will go ahead as scheduled despite the growing number of positive cases.The AFLW is already assessing suitable alternative ground options for other round-one clashes, with travel restrictions in place for Fremantle and West Coast.Qld Vaccination ratesA Gold Coast Suns spokesman said the players were waiting for PCR results, but all players had tested negative to rapid antigen tests.“We’ve taken a cautious approach and are following all guidelines provided by the Queensland Government,” the spokesman said.“It will have minimal impact on the side’s preparations for our round one fixture in Mackay and the team is looking forward to getting up to the Great Barrier Reef Arena to kick off the 2022 season.”Queensland Vaccine LocatoThe positive players will be able to leave quarantine during the week, and will be fit for selection for round one.Tickets for the match are free, but fans will need to register their attendance on Ticketek.
