An exclusion zone is in place in a coastal Queensland suburb as police negotiate with a man.

The Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) was put in place just after 3:20pm in an area of Clinton, Gladstone bordered by Aerodrome Road and Pashley Street.

Queensland Police first went to a house inside the exclusion zone about 11.40am, and specialist officers are continuing to negotiate with a man hours later.

The public should avoid the area, police have advised.

Those within the exclusion zone have been asked to stay inside until further notice.

More to come..
