A Qantas flight has turned back to Cairns after what the airline described as a "controlled shutdown" of one of the aircraft's engines.
QF703 took off from Cairns International Airport at 2.19pm and was due to land in Melbourne at 4.20pm.
Instead, the flight landed safely back in Cairns at 3.34pm.

A Qantas spokesperson said the flight taxied to the gate safely and no emergency services were needed.
The spokesperson said engineers are now investigating the incident.
