Victoria Police are searching for a dog believed to be stolen from an elderly woman who has dementia in Melbourne's south-west.

Molly, a Maltese Terrier, is the "loving companion" of a 79-year-old who lives in Werribee.

Police said a woman and a young boy came into the woman's front garden at her Stawell Street home and patted Molly between 3pm and 3.30pm on Friday.

"The two then picked up the dog and started to leave the property when the owner came out to stop them," Victoria Police said in a statement.

The offenders then left with Molly.

Police are urging anyone with information about the seven-year-old terrier to come forward.
