Mr Griffioen is deputy GM Community and Corporate and has been acting general manager since the resignation of Liz Jeremy  last November.

Mayor Steve Allan says Mr Griffioen was the top contender among a field of candidates from across Australia, bringing with him a highly regarded track record of success.

“Despite tough opposition from many impressive candidates, he impressed …  with his mature approach along with his obvious energy and drive based on his past achievements,” Cr Allan said.

Mr Griffieon has 27 years of experience in local government across NSW, Queensland, the Northern Territory, and New Zealand, and has held executive positions at West Arnhem Shire Council, Wagga Wagga City Council, Scenic Rim Regional Council, and Timaru District Council.

As the Chief Executive Officer at West Arnhem Shire Council, Mr Griffioen demonstrated strategic thinking, stakeholder engagement, and community-focused leadership, Cr Allan said.

“His achievements included implementing innovative sustainability initiatives, fostering economic development, and enhancing governance practices. These accomplishments, along with his commitment to transparency and accountability, align closely with the vision and values of Bellingen Shire Council.”

Mr Griffieon said he looked forward to fostering the growth and prosperity of the Bellingen community with a focus on high-quality services, environmental protection and sustainable development.
