Police have had to wake up a man who fell asleep at the wheel in the middle of his order at a fast-food drive-through in Victoria.

The 20-year-old was in a Ford Ranger at the Bell Street restaurant in Preston on a mission for some food about 6am Saturday when he nodded off.

He woke up not to a paper bag full of breakfast, but to officers with a breathalyser in hand.

The driver tested positive to a preliminary breath test and was taken to a nearby police station where he returned a result of .233.

The Ranger was impounded for 30 days and the man's licence was immediately suspended.

He is expected to be charged with drink driving offences, a police report states.
