Man dies after allegedly being set on fire during assault in Victoria

A man has died in hospital after he was allegedly set on fire by another man during an assault at a home in central Victoria.

The 69-year-old man was allegedly set alight after an argument on Wallaby Road in Wheatsheaf, near Daylesford, about 10.28am yesterday.

He was been airlifted to the Alfred hospital with life-threatening burns to his upper body soon after the incident, but died late last night.

Firefighters rushed to put out a fire in forest area near where the alleged assault occurred after emergency services were called.

A 63-year-old Wheatsheaf man was arrested at the scene.

He was yesterday charged with attempted murder, but police have said it is expected the charge will be upgraded to murder.

He will face Ballarat Magistrates' Court today.
