Magnitude 6.8 earthquake strikes near New Zealand

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has struck the Kermadec Islands region near New Zealand.

The tremor stuck the region, which is north east of New Zealand just before 11am AEDT, at a depth of 10km, according to Geoscience Australia.

The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed there was no tsunami threat to Australia following the large quake.
