The ute broke down after a short distance and police caught up to the driver.

The man behind the wheel, a 20-year-old from Smithfield was revealed to only hold a learner's permit, while his passenger was also not a full licence holder.

The driver allegedly returned a positive reading to a drugs test, which is undergoing further analysis.

The man was charged with multiple driving offences and will appear in court.

He lost his licence on the spot for 12 months and his ute was impounded for 28 days.
