British prosecutors said London’s Metropolitan Police were authorised to charge the 70-year-old film producer with two counts of indecent assault against a woman, now aged in her 50s.The offences are alleged to have occurred in 1996 between July 31 and August 31, according to the Met.Weinstein is serving a 23-year-jail sentence in the United States for rape and sexual assault in a conviction in February 2020, during the height of the #MeToo movement. The new charges from Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) bring the total number accusing him of wrongdoing reaching nearly 90 women, including Rose McGowan, Angela Jolie, and Gwyneth Paltrow. The Met did not name the woman who brought the latest charges. The head of the special crime division, Rosemary Ainslie, said the charges followed “a review of the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police in its investigation.” “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.”Mr Weinstein maintains his innocence against all allegations levelled against him, insisting that any sexual encounters were consensual. In a motion last year, his lawyers said his New York convictions should be overturned because of a biased judge and juror.Five judges from a New York appeals court unanimously upheld the guilty verdict and his 23-year sentence.Judge Angela Mazzarelli wrote that witnesses had helped jurors “fully understand the dynamics” between Mr Weinstein and his victims.“We perceive no basis for reducing the sentence, and we have considered the defendant’s remaining arguments and find them unavailing,” she wrote.Mr Weinstein is currently in prison in California where he faces more charges of alleged sexual assault of five women, to which has pleaded not guilty. It’s unclear how he would face trial in the UK while in custody in the US.
