A father has narrowly avoided jail after he was caught driving up to 200 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on a Sydney motorway after a drinking session.

Accountant Patrick Zhou was handed a nine-month suspended jail term, fined $1330 and is disqualified from driving for two years after he pled guilty to six charges including dangerous driving.

The Hurstville father was caught driving his Mercedes at the excessive speed through the M4 tunnel on Homebush Bay Drive in December.

NSW Police said the 27-year-old smelt strongly of alcohol and failed to do a breath test seven times.

Zhou resisted his arrest then gave a fake name and address to police.

His barrister Matt Fordham told the court "it was breathtaking stupidity".

A magistrate told Zhou he could have killed someone and he was lucky to be appearing before a local court instead of the coroner's court.
