The man convicted of killing a Gold Coast police officer more than a decade ago has died from liver cancer.

Detective Senior Constable Damian Leeding was shot in the head while trying to stop an armed hold-up at the Pacific Pines Tavern on the Gold Coast in 2011.

Phillip Graeme Abell had been trying to rob the venue with a sawn-off shotgun when Leeding disturbed him, resulting in the shooting.

Leeding died in hospital three days after the shooting.

Abell was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 20 years without parole.

At the time of sentencing, the judge said Abell had shown no remorse for gunning down an officer in the line of duty.

Abell died in prison from liver cancer over the weekend, 12 years into his life sentence.
