An emerging State of Origin star has had charges against him upgraded, after the man he allegedly punched in Queensland died in hospital.

Oshae Jackson Tuiasau, 26, allegedly punched another man at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, just before 4am on December 19.

Police said the two men were known to each other, and were walking along Surfers Paradise Boulevard, at the time of the alleged attack.

It's alleged the single punch knocked the 39-year-old New South Wales man to the ground, where he hit his head on the concrete.

Emergency services performed CPR on the man for eight minutes, before transporting him to hospital with a critical head injury.

He was then put into an induced coma.

Police confirmed this morning he had died as a result of the injury.

Mr Tuiasau, who was arrested at the time of the alleged attack, was initially charged with grievous bodily harm, and was granted bail with strict conditions after appearing in court last week.

In court, it was heard that the two men had been involved in an altercation in a nightclub, prior to the alleged punch.

Following the man's death Mr Tuiasau has been arrested again, and had his charges upgraded to striking causing death.

Mr Tuiasau appeared in Southport Magistrates Court this morning, where his family, and the family of his alleged victim, were present.

He was denied his application for bail and will spend tonight in jail.

He will return to court in February.
