Bottega to be more aggressive in Marouba Mile

Ryan has been frustrated by Bottega’s costly inability to take up a forward position early in his races.Bottega was at it again when resuming, settling at the rear of the field but working home well to finish fifth, beaten less than two lengths behind Oscar Zulu.“He has to start putting himself into his races,’’ said Ryan, who trains in partnership with Sterling Alexiou.“When he ran that really good race in the Newcastle Newmarket last autumn (second to Gem Song) he settled third and fourth and was only narrowly beaten.“Jamie Innes rode him on Tuesday morning and came back in after the gallop and said this horse will just win next start. I said I hope you are right because you are riding him on Saturday.“The horse is going well, he just has to put himself into the picture.’’Another concern or Ryan is the eight-horse Maroubra Mile field lacks a noted frontrunner so the race could well develop into a sprint home.Bottega is at $5 in TAB fixed odds Betting for the Maroubra Mile, behind Boxing Day Randwick winner Kirwan’s Lane ($3.80 favourite) and lightweight Bigboyroy ($4.80).The Ryan and Alexiou stable also have consistent stayer Oceanic Flash among the main contenders for the Heineken 3 Handicap (2400m).Oceanic Flash reeled off three successive wins before going out to 2400m for the first time when third to Ladylovestogamble and Black Queen. The trio clash again at Kensington.“I’ve always thought he would run 2400m and he wasn’t beaten far last start,’’ Ryan said of Oceanic Flash.“He is going terrific but this is a tough race. Any of the nine could win.’’Ruby Kisses is the stable’s third Kensington starter when she resumes from a let-up in The Agency Real Estate Handicap (1100m).In a deliberate tactic, Ryan hasn’t given Ruby Kisses a barrier trial to prepare for her return to racing.“She is only a little filly and doesn’t need a lot of work,’’ Ryan explained.“But she is an honest, consistent filly who has run some very good races. She works like she could win a race like this.’’
