Baby doused with petrol during alleged domestic assault in NSW

A man has been arrested after he allegedly poured petrol on a one-year-old girl during a domestic assault in Wollongong last night.

A 48-year-old woman used a pram to barricade herself into a room with the baby after a 41-year-old man started verbally abusing her, police said.

The man then forced the door open before allegedly pouring petrol on the one-year-old.

When the woman went to wash the baby's face, the man allegedly hit her over the back of the head with a glass.

She then fled with the baby and called police.

Police then went to the home in Mount Saint Thomas and arrested the man.

He was charged with three counts of assault, destroy or damage property and stalk/intimidate intend fear etc physical harm.

He was refused bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court today.

The baby was treated by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.
