One of the attackers allegedly yanked a star picket out of the ground before the assault.

Within minutes the pair had fled the scene on their bikes as a neighbour tried to chase them down.

Detectives arrested and charged a 31-year-old man at a Modbury North address just after 5pm.

Police do not believe the attack was random.

Police say they now expect to upgrade the man's charges from aggravated assault to murder.

The second suspect is described as being of Aboriginal appearance with a slim build, wearing a white singlet, dark coloured shorts and a white baseball cap. He was riding a white mountain bike.

Police do not believe the attack was random and have appealed for anyone who may have seen anything, or captured it on dashcam, to come forward.
